People have a variety of reasons for starting a business. Maybe you have an excellent business idea and you’re excited to see how it pans out. Maybe you’re tired of working at someone else’s company and you want to start one that you own.

Regardless of specific reasons, it’s important to ask a number of questions as you work through this process. These can help you set your business up for long-term success. Below are three questions to get you started.

1. Is there a target audience?

First and foremost, you need to identify the target audience that you’re going to market your products or services to. Is there a target audience in your geographical location? How can you connect with them? Do they have the necessary income to purchase your products or services? What problems do they have and how can your company solve those problems?

2. How much competition do you face?

Businesses will almost always have some competition, but it helps to know exactly what this looks like. For one thing, you don’t want to open the business in an area that is already saturated with competition. At the same time, you can identify things that your business can do better than the competition to achieve greater levels of success.

3. What is your vision for the future?

Why do you want to start a company in the first place? What are your long-term goals? Do you see this as a small, local company or maybe a side business? Or is your goal to grow as far as you can, perhaps even opening other franchise locations?

The more you know about your goals and your audience in advance, the more you can do to focus on long-term success. Be sure you know what legal steps you should take at this time.
